Two new 76 mile RUSA Permanent Populaires for those visiting or lucky enough to live here.
Frogs to the Beach and its reversed version, Virginia Beach to the Frogs.
Say you're visiting the region and want to see the oceanfront. Starting at the Chesapeake Fat Frogs bike shop (you can also get a receipt from the Starbucks or the 7-Eleven that are there) you pass through farmlands
and quiet roads
until you ride over the dreaded Pungo Ferry Bridge
and then through the rural area of Pungo itself.
There you'll find horse farms
and llamas.
You may see a few cyclists there
Crossing over Rudee inlet,
you come in to the oceanfront area itself. From there you can simply continue down lovely Pacific avenue
or opt for a detour to ride down the boardwalk which runs parallel. (To do so, you'll turn right at the 5th street light at the foot of the bridge over Rudee inlet. Then continue across Atlantic Ave, up the sidewalk and onto the boardwalk. Just be sure to only ride on the section designated for bikes or you may get ticketed by the police.)
Just watch your language
Look for the King Neptune statue for your turn to get back out to Pacific near the control
The turn-around comes at Pacific Place shops.
At the turn-around, you can enjoy a pastry and coffee at Perked Up! (unless it's Sunday, when they are closed) or use the 7-Eleven located just behind Pacific Place shops
The route also takes you along the edge of a National Wildlife Refuge.
If you are staying at the Oceanfront and want to see other parts of the area, just opt for the Virgina Beach to the Frogs route. This starts at the 7-Eleven (or the Perked Up! coffee shop) follows the same route in reverse and makes the turn-around in Chesapeake at the Fat Frogs bike shop/Starbucks/7-Eleven
Contact me via email as per the RUSA website if you are interested.
(Just use the Permanents search, select Virginia and the 100-199km distance and you'll see them listed by starting city.)
Remember, you are required to be a RUSA member for these rides and must register and sign a waiver.
I can handle the processing of your RUSA membership and will waive any fees for the ride itself if you are paying to join or renew your RUSA membership.
Thanks to Crista for the fast approval and to Kim who helped me scout this route.
Google Docs re-formats my lovely cue sheets into a bit of a mess, but if you'd like to get some idea of the route here's the Frogs to the Beach cue sheet and here's the Virginia Beach to the Frogs one
